The Home Connection
provides supportive services and transitional housing for homeless
families with children under the age of eighteen. The Home Connection
is the only Des Moines metro area transitional housing program that
offers a neighborhood living environment for families.
According to a 2005 study commissioned by the Iowa Council on Homelessness,
families with children make up the majority of all the homeless
in Iowa. According to 2005 study by Affordable Housing and Homeless
Partnership, the unmet need for transitional housing is considerable.
In 2006, The Home Connection served 24 families comprised of 71 percent children and 29 percent adults. Thirteen families left the transitional housing program and of them 77 percent moved to either permanent housing rental or home ownership. For additional information about how the Home Connection helped families in 2006, view 2006
Annual Report.
